Catholic Relief Services – Guatemala

Many children living in poverty suffer from malnutrition and high mortality rates, and Guatemala is no exception. Guatemala’s high infant and maternal mortality rates are a result of inequities in access to healthcare. Moreover, Guatemala has the highest rate of chronic malnutrition in Central America, with half of all preschool children malnourished. Chronic malnutrition and poor healthcare increase infant mortality rates as well as impact school performance and overall development.

In January of 2016, OMPT partnered with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) on a maternal child health project. The workshop took place in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala and trained 21 CRS staff members. OMPT also delivered 2 camera kits, 10 projector kits and 10 recharging kits. Catholic Relief Services staff members will utilize OMPT’s training and equipment to talk with communities about proper breastfeeding techniques, sanitation, diversifying diet and emphasizing the importance of prenatal and infant health care.
