The illuminAid workshops of 2021: a summary
With the pandemic hampering humanitarian aid operations in 2020, illuminAid broke free in 2021 with a schedule of workshops spanning the entire year and across the global south. Workshops were coordinated with respective international partners in training and equipping underdeveloped communities with the skills and tools to uplift and empower.
illuminAid’s first workshop of the year began with AIFO Liberia in early May. The main goal was capacity building for disabled persons in using technology as a bridge to inform local communities of their challenges. The workshop also worked at amplifying the struggle they endured within the pandemic, and how technology can help them advocate for greater access to information and disability rights. A second workshop followed closely behind in late May, taking illuminAid to the continent of South America. This workshop, partnering with Plan International Paraguay, focused on empowering young women through safety and health using technology as a tool to disseminate educational videos and uphold women rights. With Plan International, illuminAid helped to promote practices against COVID-19 through accurate knowledge on prevention measures, and international safety standards. Following a much needed break, illuminAid found itself in Mozambique in early October with partner Pathfinder International. The workshop helped in teaching participants how to use technology effectively in uplifting and spreading awareness on women's rights and family planning benefits. illuminAid highlighted the importance of technology as it can be critical in teaching sexual and reproductive rights in neglected communities across the country. The last workshop of the year found illuminAid traveling to Turkey in a facilitated training with The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) alongside Pakistan government officials. The workshop functioned in helping partners understand the video production process and equipment needed to sustainably reach rural communities. GIZ and illuminAid workshop helped underscore the importance of inclusive training that respects sustainable technology and promotes educational development regarding health care for underdeveloped regions of Pakistan/Afghanistan.
