Bridging the digital divide: Android devices in illuminAid's training programs

At illuminAid, we're always working to enhance our technology strategy to better support our non-government organization (NGO) partners in the field. Drawing from invaluable feedback and insights from our partners working in developing areas, we're excited to share that we've recently added Android phones and tablets to our Video Education Workshop (VEW) program. This expansion highlights our commitment to making video education more accessible, efficient and impactful.

Why Android?

The decision to incorporate Android devices into our program is driven by two key factors:
  • Efficiency and versatility: Android tablets serve as all-in-one devices capable of both shooting and editing videos. This integration eliminates the need for separate cameras and laptops, streamlining the video production process for our partners. An NGO team member can now capture high-quality footage and edit it on the same device. This reduces the logistical challenges and costs of using multiple pieces of equipment.
  • Affordability and accessibility: The relative affordability of Android tablets, coupled with the widespread availability of Android phones in developing communities, makes video making more inclusive for small and low-resource NGOs. By lowering the financial barrier to entry, we empower more organizations to harness the power of video for education and behavior change. This inclusivity is vital for ensuring that all NGOs, regardless of their size or budget, can leverage modern technology to amplify their impact.
Additionally, many community members are already familiar with Android devices. As a result, by using Android devices, we reduce the learning curve for video production. Users are more likely to engage with and master video making tools on devices they already use daily.

A thank you to our sponsor

We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors at LumaTouch for their support in this initiative. Its powerful yet easy-to-use video editing software, compatible with Android devices, is a game changer for our program partners. This software allows users, regardless of their experience level, to create impressive and effective videos.
