How illuminAid’s Three-part Intervention Makes a Difference
illuminAid is dedicated to educating the poorest communities in the world through low-cost video technology. Our mission consists of three parts: training, equipping and empowering. By adhering to these principles, we have witnessed tangible change and significant impact worldwide. Let's delve into each part and explore some illustrative examples.
THE THREE PARTS
Training
Training is the initial step we take. We commence with a four-day workshop in environments where technology is less prevalent than in developed countries. With this in mind, we start with the fundamentals, providing extensive hands-on learning. Our dedicated volunteers and staff offer instruction not only in shooting and editing videos but also in video planning, integration and dissemination. Ultimately, we aim to assist participants in creating impactful videos that effectively convey their intended messages.
Equipping
The next part is equipping. We provide participants with a kit that includes essential tools to kickstart their video production. Beginning with a camera, we include stabilizing equipment such as tripods. Additionally, our kits include a small lav microphone. Considering the necessity of video visibility, we also supply portable video projectors. Given that electricity may be scarce in certain communities, we address this challenge by providing solar power charging kits, AC or DC chargers as needed.
Empowering
The third aspect of our mission is empowering. We aim to support participants beyond the initial training and equipment provision. To achieve this, we remain connected for a year after the initial visit, focusing on capacity development. We assist in amplifying their message by exploring additional avenues for video dissemination. Moreover, we aid participants in envisioning new messages and future video productions. Some of this ongoing training is conducted through distance learning.
illuminAid's Mission in Action
We have numerous successful case studies exemplifying the implementation of our three-part mission. For instance, in Honduras, we trained, equipped and empowered a team dedicated to assisting coffee farmers in optimizing their resources. They have created videos that explain how to transform coffee harvest waste into valuable compost for soil nourishment. These videos are being shared with farmers in remote areas, contributing to their industry's growth and environmental impact.
Another example comes from our work in Togo, a West African country. Collaborating with the Ministry of Health and other organizations, our team has produced videos that educate school children on the significance of health and hygiene. These videos cover topics such as proper hand washing, nutrition and the use of mosquito netting. By targeting the next generation, we are influencing the future well-being of the nation.
While our mission may seem simple on the surface, it's replicable in any culture. It is scalable and adaptable as technology and tools continue to evolve. We have learned from experience that simplicity is key to sustainability.
