What’s Happening in Tigray?

Thousands of refugees are fleeing Ethiopia’s Tigray region (located in northern Ethiopia), an area described now as a war zone. The outbreak of violence is the result of tensions between the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF had previously held many positions in the government and the military, but they were removed from their positions under Prime Minister Ahmed. Since the violence has erupted in the Tigray region, refugees have fled over the border and into Sudan, where it is estimated that 45 percent of the refugees are children. Makeshift classrooms have been created in these camps in an effort to provide education and structure to the children. The determination to educate these children despite their circumstances shows that the communities understand the importance of education for the future. Even with very few resources, the children are being taught subjects like English, Aramahic, and science.

illuminAid’s technology and practices could make a large impact on the education in these camps. Our previous work in refugee camps has proven that our technology can also be used to provide information about several other topics including WASH, health and nutrition, which can be very important in refugee camps.
