Meet Tim: Our Hardworking Volunteer from Germany!
Today, learn a little bit more about Tim, new to the US and an amazing addition to our staff as a volunteer.
What did you do before you moved to the U.S.?
I studied Political Science at the University of Hamburg, Germany, as well as Peace and Development at the Linnaeus University in Sweden. While studying, I also worked at a non-profit organization in Hamburg which engages in child and youth support. With the help of my education and experience, I am trying to improve the lives of others wherever I can.
How long have you been volunteering at illuminAid?
I've been volunteering here since the beginning of July, so for about three months now.
What are some of your duties as a volunteer?
I help with social media posts, website editing, information acquisition, and video editing. I don’t mind doing any work that has to be done. I’m here to help.
What has been your favorite thing about volunteering at illuminAid?
I really like the people I work with, as well as the tasks that I do. It’s a very good opportunity for me to meet new people and make connections. Also being able to learn a variety of new skills is very beneficial for me.
What is one thing that you’ve learned since you’ve been volunteering?
There have been little things I was able to experience during my time here so far. For example skills such as social media curating, picture and even video editing. I did not know how to edit videos before, but now I feel pretty confident in it.
Do you have a hobby or something you like to do in your spare time?
I’d say sports, mostly table tennis. I stopped playing a lot once I came over to Chico from Germany since I haven’t found the right place in Chico just yet. Otherwise I like going to the gym, watching TV shows or going for a hike. I enjoy nature a lot—California has a lot to offer and is very versatile in landscapes!
What's a difference you notice between the U.S. and Germany?
Honestly, there aren’t too many differences. The culture and general mindset of people is mainly the same here in the U.S. as it is in Germany. I have to admit that people are a lot friendlier here to strangers though. Also, I learned to love Mexican food pretty quickly. Now, no week passes without burritos and tacos.
